Dawn W.'s Calliope
Three years ago, a little baby bird came into my life.
She was handed to me in the hope that something could be done for her that no one else had the time, nor the inclination for.
Her legs were paralyzed behind her, and she had suffered head injury as well. We named her "Calliope" after a hummingbird that can fly straight up to the sky, swinging back down with abandon and one loud chirp...
in the hope that one day, she too would fly with abandon.
She never did, but she learned to walk again, and she had one very loud chirp when she was at her happiest.
That was enough.
Calliope taught me that the simple things in life are the most precious.
Simply putting one foot in front of the other.
Simply enjoying the warming rays of the sun.
Simply watching the world go by in her gentle way.
Simply relishing in the life she had and never wanting more.
How important simple contentment was.
Calliope left us suddenly, and I am so sad to see her go.
She was a miracle in her simplicity.
She was simply precious.
Wherever she is now, I hope she has the chance to fly straight up to the sky, swinging back with a loud chirp of ecstatic happiness.
She deserves every bit of that kind of freedom that she never knew here, yet never once requested.
I will miss you my Happy Baby,
and I will never forget what you gave to my life...
Simple Joy.
